A LIFE TRANSFORMED

through the power of vibrations.

AN UNEXPECTED BEGINNING

I was five weeks into my sobriety journey. After 42 years of drinking and marijuana use, I honestly didn’t know how life would be without my two “tools” for living. I believed I needed alcohol and marijuana to enjoy anything—eating, movies, everything I did for fun.

At an AA meeting, someone announced they were going to start a meditation meeting with live music. I had no idea what type of “band” would be there, and I had never meditated before, but I was willing to try anything and everything to stay sober.

I was in a small room with just a few people. I sat in a chair and let it happen. I closed my eyes. I didn’t know what was happening or where the sounds were coming from. It sounded like several people playing multiple instruments, and the sound seemed to come from all around the room.

I’m not sure how deep I went that first time, but I knew I was hooked. I didn’t miss a week. Each time I went, I let go more and more, to the point where the room disappeared, and I felt like I was floating. I had never experienced anything like this before. That was how I was introduced to sound meditation.

I went to the meeting. I entered a small room with just a few people. I sat in a chair and let it happen. There was a gentleman surrounded by bowls and other instruments, including a couple of gongs. I closed my eyes. I didn’t know what was happening or where the sounds were coming from. It sounded like several people playing multiple instruments, and the sound seemed to come from all around the room.

My mind is always racing, and it took a while to settle into what was happening. I’m not sure how deep I went that first time, but I knew I was hooked. I adjusted my schedule to attend that meeting every week. Each time I went, I let go more and more, to the point where the chair or floor disappeared, and I felt like I was floating. I had never experienced anything like this before. I came to realize this may have been what I was searching for when consuming copious amounts of alcohol and marijuana. Now I was hooked on meditation. I began exploring meditation in many ways and found that it can happen anywhere, anytime. It’s as simple as breathing. Although my introduction to meditation was through a somewhat involved sound healing with multiple instruments,

I discovered that meditation doesn’t require elaborate setups

— just being is enough.

BECOMING AN INSTRUMENT

I purchased my first instrument, a rain drum, which I call my gateway instrument. Soon, I acquired a set of crystal singing bowls. Then, a 36” Pluto Planetary Gong. Initially, I felt I had no business owning such an instrument, but I loved it. Now that I had collected all these really cool toys, it’s no fun not sharing them! I began playing at home and for my friends. Some didn’t quite understand but others seemed to find exactly what I had found at my first meeting many months ago. Several have since began their own meditation practices.

I offered to bring some bowls and my gong to the meetings I was attending. Initially, people were skeptical. Change can be daunting, and this seemed too weird. But once they experienced it for themselves, they were blown away.

SHARING THE GIFT

In the beginning, facilitating this experience for others felt strange. I didn’t know what I was doing and just let the instruments guide me. I felt like an imposter, yet after the meditation, people would share what an amazing experience it was for them. They couldn’t believe they had been able to sit or lie there for 45 minutes—the time flew by.

I have been offering sound meditation for my community—at retreats, private & corporate events, meetings, sober living homes, treatment facilities, yoga studios, and in the intimacy of people’s homes—for over two years now. I feel blessed for the many different populations I’ve been invited to serve and I remain humbled by how much there still is for me to learn. I am only an instrument for what comes through.

I love it when people tell me about the journeys they went on after a session. Sometimes, they describe how a darkness was lifted from them, or how they went through this darkness and then emerged feeling lighter and free. Some say they’ve never been able to relax like that for even five minutes, let alone a whole session!

My journey with sound has changed me.

It is very profound and goes deep.

I believe it can happen for others too. This experience was given to me, and I am grateful to be able to share it with others. I have seen the sound healing community grow in the Greater Phoenix/Scottsdale metro areas, and it is my sincere hope that it will expand even more. It may not be for everyone, but for those it is for, it can be a life-changing experience. It was for me.
